TFH, Fitness and Athletes

MARGARET SHEEHAN

1987 CONFERENCE PAPER

Fitness is fast becoming a way of life in our world. Almost everyone has at least attempted some type of sport or activity to improve their well-being. Unfortunately many abandon exer- cise programs because of pain or fatigue that results from muscle imbalances. Touch for Health can be an invaluable tool in overcoming those obstacles and make getting in shape an exciting process of self discovery. Even for those who are fit and competing in strenuous events, TFH can give a physical and psychological edge in preparing for competition, preventing debili- tating injuries and reducing recovery time. As TFH instructors, I think it’s extremely important for us to look at the possibilities of TFH becom- ing an active partner with the fitness movement to attain our goal of helping people to improve their physical and mental well-being.

  1. I’ve been asked to put on a fun and energizing workshop in Munich next month: Joyful Movement, Performance & Sport! I found this article a great reinforcement of the basic principles of TFH, as applied to fitness and athletes. Education, communication, simple tools to take home, and use before, during and after your competition or performance. And don’t forget ESR! Remember that sometimes the athlete who VISUALIZES their performance outperforms the one who physically practiced! Release the stressful charge/ alarm reaction related to challenges, and you can reach your personal best!
